The Authentic History Center
is comprised of artifacts and sounds from American popular culture. It was created to teach that the everyday objects in society have authentic historical value and reflect the social consciousness of the era that produced them. Authentic also means conforming to fact, and therefore worthy of trust, reliance, or belief. To meet this definition by presenting an authentic interpretation of American history is our ultimate goal. When a collection is whole enough to be considered an authentic representation of the sources produced about an historical event, they are presented via interpretive essay. Until then, incomplete collections are presented as digital archives without comment for individual study. Additionally, a large audio archive of speeches and news broadcasts are presented for students to experience a level of historical authenticity distinct from written sources. The Authentic History Center is an ambitious work-in-progress and always will be.

Greek History
wo of the most important city states were Athens and Sparta. We know a lot about Athens because it produced many writers and artists, whose work has survived to this day. Much less evidence survives about Sparta but we do know that it was a military state.

Athens and Sparta were rivals but, during a famous period in their history, they joined together with other city states to fight off the Persians. It was during this campaign that the Athenians fought the Battle of Marathon, and defeated the Persian fleet at Salamis.
Immigration
Despite its small size, Ellis Island--a tiny strip of land located in Upper New York Bay, near the New Jersey shore--holds a big part of the history of the United States. Of the 16 million immigrants who arrived in the U.S. from 1892 to 1954, 12 million of them passed through the federal immigration station located on the island. History.com invites you to explore Ellis Island as seen by the millions who landed there, full of hope and seeking a new beginning in the New World. » Find out more

First Thanksgiving

Jamestown
In 1606, some 105 adventurers set off from England to try and establish the first permanent English colony in the New World. They settled in what is now the state of Virginia and called their colony first James Fort, and then James Towne, in honor of James I, the King of England. The early years of the colony were nearly a total disaster. Almost half of the settlers died due to poor choices in settlement location, management of resources, and quarrels with the indigenous Powhatan Indians.

Jamestown Facts
Captain John Smith (January 9, 1580 - June, 1631) was an English adventurer and soldier, and one of the founders of the Jamestown, Virginia, settlement. Smith also led expeditions exploring Chesapeake Bay and the New England coast

Native American Facts
